Resurfacing After a Long Absence

Hello everyone. I've been absent for a long time again. Of course, I have my reasons. Normally, I'd call them excuses, but homeschooling my girls is a legit reason.

I know I started with the homeschooling but I want to deviate back to what I'm doing in my author world that has been sorely neglected lately.

I have a book signing with seven other authors in November. It's at the Piedmont Library on the 12th of November. It begins at 10 AM. I don't know how long it will last, probably for as long as we still have people there to visit with us. I'm excited for this because it's been a long time since I've done a signing. In fact, I believe I've only had one signing in the past two years.

I plan to make another post or two about this signing before the actual date to remind anyone who might want to attend. I have also started an event over on Facebook. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1221051157966941/

The pertinent information about the signing:

What:    Book Talk and Signing - All the authors have been asked to speak for about five minutes.                     Not sure if we all will have something to say, but we will all be available to visit.

Where:  Piedmont Valley Library
             111 Second Street
              Piedmont, SD

When:  Saturday, November 12th, 2016

Who:    Sandra Brannan - Thriller
             Lynn Fullmer - Children's
             Karen Hall - Mystery
Jorie Jertson - True Crime/Poetry/Memoir/Historical Fiction
             Mary Nelson Keithahn - Spiritual/Inspirational/Children's
             JC Phelps - Action Adventure
             Dorothy Rosby - Humor
             JE Terrall - Western

Why:    Because!

The rest of this post is for those of you who might care what I'm doing outside of the writing world.

As I said, I pulled my daughters out of public school at the end of the school year last year and started homeschooling them. It wasn't an easy decision but it was the right one. We've been enjoying ourselves and have even bought our very own school uniforms. Blue and pink are our school colors because those are the favorite colors of my two girls. We even have a mascot. If you've been following my personal posts at all you'll know we have ponds on our property. They have fish, frogs, turtles, and crawdads. My eight-year-old chose our mascot as the crawdad and, though we have no real team for anything, we've decided to call ourselves the Murky Water Crawdads. All the idea of my eight-year-old.

I've never wanted to be a teacher. I believe it's a thankless job with major frustrations and I know I wouldn't enjoy it. That's if I was teaching other people's children and having to deal with the bureaucracy and parents. It's completely different teaching my own children. I'm thoroughly enjoying watching them and helping them learn. The way their eyes light up when I've explained something well enough so they understand it for the first time is amazing.

I pulled them out about a month before their Kindergarten and second grade years were complete so we started from the beginning and have been trying hard to stay caught up and haven't set an exact schedule other than work, work, work, as much as possible without getting too grouchy. This schedule doesn't lend itself well to writing so I've been fairly stagnant on that end. I do find a little time late at night to do a little writing, but that's all I've done, a little.

However, I am able to work with my hands while I help my girls and have been crocheting like a mad woman. I've completed several projects and will share pictures with you.

A friend tempted me with a video tutorial for a chicken potholder. Yep. It's a chicken. I couldn't find any solid red yarn so her comb looks more like a funky bonnet.

I crocheted two tank tops and one sweater for my girls. I've since bought shirts to go under them, but took the pictures before I did that.  I also made matching wristers and boot cuffs for all three but the sweater took more yarn so I made matching scarves for the two tank tops, only. Sorry, no pictures of those.

I'm currently trying to knit (not crochet) a blanket for my husband for Christmas. I don't know if I'll finish it in time. I'm fairly fast at crochet, but not very fast or good at the knitting. Practice makes perfect, right?

Chapter Twenty-Nine

The first observation room I tried was the right one. Brown, Green, and my father were watching through two-way glass. Blue and Black were in the room with Red and Alan. I imagined Black was security and the syringe in Blue’s hand suggested he was acting as the chemist, making Red the interrogator.

Chapter Thirty

I hopped into a cab and made the driver drive around aimlessly for about ten minutes while I thought. Finally, I had him drop me off near my hidden apartment. I wasn’t wearing my hoodie so I hoped no one was watching as I entered my building.

Chapter Thirty-One

I sat at the table for a few minutes before I took Mark’s phone from his pocket and snapped a picture of him with it.

Chapter Twenty-Five

I walked into the lodge and was met by two men I’d never seen before.
“Your weapons, Ms. Grey,” one of them said while holding out his hand.
“They stay with me,” I said.

Chapter Twenty-Six

Alan led Joe and me to a waiting chopper.
“I’ll give you directions once we’re in the air,” Alan said.
“Never learned to pilot,” I lied.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

I felt dazed for a good fifteen minutes before my head started to clear again, but my shoulder was still hurting. I didn’t see or feel any blood so I didn’t think Alan ripped my stitches out again, but I wanted to go check it, just in case.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

The chopper got us safely to the airstrip and the plane got us back to the airport without incident. Sam met us on the tarmac and took possession of the plane.

Chapter Twenty-One

I made my way back to my hotel room and dialed Posner.
“You have five minutes to call your men and have them back off. I told you about having people follow me.”

Chapter Twenty-Two

Ten hours in the air was stressful, even when it was a private flight. Thankfully I was able to sleep at least half the way down to South America.
When we stepped out of the plane and into the thick air I thought about the long days on the wall back at the refinery. This very air helped create who I was today. The heavily perfumed, thick air that was hard to take in. Everything had been pretty hard to take in for a long time now and it felt normal.

Chapter Twenty-Three

With the use of Green’s tablet and my memory, we created a plan within a couple hours.

Chapter Twenty-Four

We’d been back at the office building for two days and Ruiz had been uncooperative. As was the case with my father.

Chapter Seventeen

Black escorted me back to my apartment after the briefing in C.I.C.

Chapter Eighteen

I spent most of the morning doing arm exercises with Blue. I was still tender so the movements made me break out into a sweat. When we were done he handed me two ibuprofen to dull the pain.

Chapter Nineteen

I had him in my sites. All I had to do was pull the trigger.

Chapter Twenty

Within half an hour I’d tracked the five million. The money paid to Mayhaffy had originated from Posner.

Chapter Thirteen

My apartment remained free of unwanted surveillance devices so I put the bug sweeper away and sat at my table with my laptop open. I considered playing a video game but decided I didn’t want to. I even opened up my e-reader app and chose a book to read before I shut that down. Instead, I opened up my bank’s online program to check my account. The transfer wasn’t there, but I didn’t expect it to be.

Chapter Fourteen

Jake drove me away from Mesa in silence. He’d tried to ask me what was going on, but I hadn’t trusted myself to speak.

Chapter Fifteen

My bed was so comfortable. I’d forgotten.

Chapter Sixteen

I could hear the men talking in the main room of my apartment, but I couldn’t hear what they were saying. It was less than two minutes before I decided to make my way to the door to eavesdrop.

Chapter Nine

Jake remained in the parking lot after I left him. I had no idea how long he planned to sit out there, but I wasn’t going to tell him when I left. I waited until a couple hours before dark then changed into my burglar looking outfit, stuck Lance’s keys and my beanie in my pocket, and slipped out of a back door of the hotel. Jake was still in place and I hoped he’d sit there all night long. At least until I finished the job.

Chapter Ten

I woke up with a headache and I didn’t have any painkillers. When I sat up it got worse but I embraced it. I deserved it because of what I’d dreamed about last night and was still considering while awake.

Chapter Eleven

Two days alternating between lying in bed, reconsidering my life choices, and pacing my apartment didn’t do much to lighten my mood.

Chapter Twelve

Jake tossed an envelope onto his table then went to his cupboards and pulled out a couple of coffee cups.

Chapter Five

The next few days felt like Hell. I was stuck in my room partly to avoid Eric and partly because I was sore and needed some time to heal up. Jake did his best to stop in and visit when he could, but the majority of my hours were spent reading.

Chapter Six

I took a break from my Mayhaffy research since I wasn’t making any progress, to further the illusion I’d gone to Chicago. I almost had to book another flight to a different city because some neuroscience convention made it almost impossible to find a hotel room. I’d never check in but the only people who’d know that would be the actual hotel staff or if someone showed up on site to ask.

Chapter Seven

Flying commercial sucked. Not only did I have to arrive early to check my non-existent baggage and go through security, I had to endure catching two connecting flights and some guy trying to make conversation during the flight.

Chapter Eight

When I rolled out of bed, I went directly to my laptop to check my account and found a sizable amount of money had been deposited.

Eight Days Until Release - Edge of Grey

When White is taken from Alex, she finds a new purpose.

Eight days and Edge of Grey will be out in ebook format.

I'm getting excited, worried, scared, nervous, happy... you mention it and I'm feeling it.  I hope you all like the next installment. I also wanted to take the time to thank you all for giving my books a chance.

In the past I've posted the first sentence from other soon-to-be released books and thought I'd do the same for Edge of Grey.  This time I'm going to make a slight change. I'm going to release the first paragraph of each chapter as long as the paragraph doesn't hold too many spoilers.

Since we are only eight days away from release I will be posting four chapters a day for the next seven days and three chapters the day before release.

Here we go...

Chapter One

Jolted awake by my vibrating phone, I broke out in a cold sweat. This phone should be inactive. It was nothing more than a security blanket. Or so I thought.

Chapter Two

I made my way back to my room and paced for forty-five minutes before I gave in and went for a run. I felt as if I might explode. If Jake couldn’t come through for me, I was leaving. Even if I didn’t fully trust these men at Mesa I didn’t want to have to start all over again, and in a new city.

Chapter Three

Back in my room I went directly to my shower. The run right before my meeting with Posner had made me sweaty and gross. I didn’t hear Jake come in and was glad I hadn’t gone back to his room to wait.

Chapter Four

The three of us walked back into Mesa via the lobby. Andrew Thomas’ blood had dried and I felt it pulling and cracking as I walked. It stunk and I was very uncomfortable. At least I wouldn’t be upset about throwing this dress away.
