Whatever Wednesday - What's up?

I use Grammarly's free plagiarism checker because I don't look good in prison colors.

It's Whatever Wednesday time.  So what should I write about?

How about an update on what's been going on in my world?

I have been asked to do a short presentation on self-publishing for a local writer's group.  As soon as I'm done with this post I hope to put that together.

My computer gave me a message recently that the hard drive is damaged and unrepairable, so I have ordered a new computer.  I'm hoping the computer I'm using right now will last until I get the new one or at least until I get the new backup device.  I think I'm most excited about the backup device.  I'm strange and don't enjoy getting new computers.

The friendliness and helpfulness of people amazes me every day.  A reader contacted me on my Facebook page and asked about book signings or a book tour.  I haven't done a book signing for quite some time, but I haven't had a new book to sign for a while.  Now I do, so maybe I'll have to try to set up some book related get togethers.  The problem with that is I have to come up with the time and money to do it.  Because of this, I tend to stay close to home and this particular reader is about 1500 miles from me.  However, we are considering a trip to her neck of the woods some time this spring or summer.

She has kindly offered to try to find me a place to set up.  If that happens, I'll be posting about it here and on my Facebook pages.  If she's unable to find a place willing to host me and we still make our trip, we'll have to work something else out so I'll get a chance to meet her in person.

If anyone else has interest in a book signing in your area I'd love to hear about it.  I've only done signings in my local area but wouldn't mind expanding and meeting more of you.  I can't promise any dates or locations, but if there is enough interest I'd love the excuse to get out there.

Now I'm off to get that presentation put together so I can get back to Alex and her crew.

Review

4.0 out of 5 stars: Enjoyable Read Even With a Few Glitches, by Vicki Baldwin
Shadowed has a very strong plot that keeps moving in a fast and fascinating manner. It creates a suspenseful read that you don't want to put down. Ken Hughes, the author, has added an new twist to his paranormal novel. I am mainly a mystery/suspense reader and found that this novel met all of the requirements. I enjoyed it immensely.
There were a few areas that I became confused with which character Ken was referring to especially when he was changing scenes. I found it necessary to either read back or forward a few sentences before I grasped the flow and was able to figure out which character he was referring to.
I enjoyed reading this book and found it well worth my time. I would highly recommend it for an exciting reading that is suited for a number of genres.

Featured Book - Tony and Me

Tony and Me
by
Jack Klugman

Description

The close professional relationship between Jack Klugman and Tony Randall has long been famous, but the details of their personal friendship have never been revealed until now. In Tony and Me by Jack Klugman with Burton Rocks the depth of this friendship is fully explored and touchingly revealed for the very first time. In his tribute, Klugman provides the ultimate insider’s view of a relationship that went well beyond what the public saw in The Odd Couple.

Tony and Me follows both actors from their early days of stage and television to the “Camelot” of The Odd Couple; from Klugman’s fight with invasive throat cancer to Randall’s struggle to open a National Actors Theatre. What emerges is a touching portrait of a legendary professional relationship that, in the end, became deeply personal. Tony and Me also has a foreword by Garry Marshall and includes over fifty photographs, many from Jack and Tony’s private collection, as well as an included DVD of never-before-seen out takes from The Odd Couple. This final component makes Tony and Me a great experience not only for diehard fans and history buffs, but for anyone in search of a good laugh.

Featured Book - An Involuntary Spy

An Involuntary Spy
by
Kenneth Eade

Description

Get the book that breaks open the GMO controversy

Seth Rogan was a shitty spy. Actually, he wasn't a spy at all. Just a guy trying to do the right thing. As a biologist for the largest biotech company in the world, he had a great job, and thoroughly enjoyed all the perks. But when asked to do some tests on the company's genetically engineered foods, he became entangled in a trail of corruption and fraud that he wanted no part of, but could not escape from. In a story so true to life it could almost be from today's newspapers, Seth, having bit the hand who fed him, is on the run from them, and the full overreaching strength of the United States government as a fugitive, who finds temporary refuge with an old enemy of the U.S. But his peace is about to be broken as he finds himself in the role of an involuntary spy.  This is a thriller with mystery, suspense, twists and turns and non stop action that will pull you in and captivate you with all the elements you would expect from the genre; spies, CIA, Russians, FBI; but not how you would expect them.  Being centered around the controversial subject of the danger of genetically engineered foods, the book breaks open the controversy.

Recently Read - Divergent Series

Divergent - Insurgent - Allegiant
by
Veronica Roth

Divergent: One choice can transform you. Veronica Roth's #1 New York Times bestselling debut is a gripping dystopian tale of electrifying choices, powerful consequences, unexpected romance, and a deeply flawed "perfect society.

Insurgent: One choice can destroy you. Veronica Roth's second #1 New York Times bestseller continues the dystopian thrill ride. As war surges in the factions all around her, Tris attempts to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Allegiant: The explosive conclusion to Veronica Roth's #1 New York Times bestselling Divergent trilogy reveals the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers.

I recently read this trilogy.  Okay, I listened to them as audio books.  I try to make it my policy to only review books I enjoyed.  My reasons are many and mostly self serving.  Because of this I almost passed up doing a review for these books.  After a few days of digesting the full story, I must admit, even if these books won't make me swoon, cheer, or cry, I will always remember them.

Though I won't be gushing about this series, overall, I don't feel I wasted my time getting through them.  The story is given to us from Tris' point of view and I started off really enjoying the character.  I was completely caught up in Divergent and finished listening to it in record time - seriously.  (Not far into the book I turned up the speaking speed so I could get through it and start Insurgent.)

I kept up the speed through Insurgent, but started to lose interest as the relationship between Tris and Tobias developed.  I really didn't like Tobias.

Please, don't send emails to tell me how stupid I am because I didn't like Tobias.  I know this series is a big one for a lot of people.  Just not for me.  I'm allowed to crush on whomever I choose and leave some behind.  Tobias is one I would walk past.  I'm sure he wouldn't give me a second glance either. (It's always fun to talk about fictional characters as if we'd see them on the street.)

By the time I got to Allegiant I was still hopeful.  Allegiant deviates from Tris' point of view and includes Tobias' voice.  I liked this addition.  But, more insight into Tobias' inner workings didn't help me like him.

I want to avoid spoilers, so I'll say that a very important event happens near the end of Allegiant and I should have had a very strong emotional response, but I didn't. This is a strong indicator that the books didn't work their way into my heart, just my mind.

Now, having said all that mean stuff - I did finish the full series.  This says a lot.  If I don't enjoy a book I put it down.  Some people have to finish what they start - I don't.

Featured Book - The Dogs Don't Bark in Brooklyn Any More

The Dogs Don't Bark in Brooklyn Any More
by
Eric Robert Nolan

Description

“There was a time, Rebecca’s father had told her, when wolves could not speak. She wished for that time.”
Rebecca O’Conner is the daughter of a hero, a veteran soldier of The Wolf War. Now, she herself is a Captain in the Special Animal Warfare Service (SAWS), fighting, as her father did, against the super intelligent wolves that have taken over most of the continental United States.
The Dogs Don’t Bark In Brooklyn Any more spans two periods of Rebecca’s life: the tumultuous Brooklyn childhood that shapes her future, preparing her for the soldier she must become, and her struggle to keep herself and her squad alive as she prepares to meet her destiny. Her empirical mind rebels against the chaotic dreams that haunt her, suggesting a greater path than she can yet comprehend as she seeks to find an end to the war.
The enemy is smart, strong and fearless; the odds are stacked against the human race. Is there hope for us in the war with the wolves? Will humanity prevail and reclaim its place as the dominant species on Earth? Or will the great demonic wolf that stalks Rebecca in her sleep close its jaws over the world and drive us to extinction?

Featured Book - The Pinocchio Principle

The Pinocchio Principle
Becoming a Real Leader
by
Diane Bolden

Description

In times of massive change, it is more important than ever for each of us to tap our inner reserves of wisdom, creativity and resilience to rise up to the challenges and opportunities that face us as individuals, organizations, and communities. The Pinocchio Principle is a road map to help you get back to the basics of who you are, what you are here to accomplish, and how you can leverage your best and worst experiences to lead authentically — regardless of your vocation, title or role.

Drawing from her experience as an executive coach and using Pinocchio as a metaphor, Diane Bolden guides you through a process of learning to integrate your head with your heart, utilize your intuition, challenge your limits and move out of your comfort zone to unearth your greatest work while inspiring others to do the same. The Pinocchio Principle blends wisdom with inspiration and humor and includes numerous stories and examples of personal and professional transformation as well as practical tips and tools that will help you become a true leader to others in the only way possible: by first leading yourself.

Diane has proven expertise in leadership development. She has taught, facilitated and designed numerous programs over the years, and worked with managers, directors and vice presidents/officers and their teams to help them learn and apply strategies for improving their effectiveness. Her experiences led her to recognize that people learn best when they are faced with challenges that require them not only to develop new skills but to effectively apply them. She complements this knowledge with the philosophy that often what is required is not only learning, but unlearning. As Diane works with her clients to align their intentions and actions with desired results, she also helps them identify and eliminate habits, patterns and assumptions that keep them from doing their best work.

Many coaches shy away from advising their clients, leaving them at a loss as to how to best approach organizational and leadership challenges. Diane draws from her experience and knowledge of organizational behavior and leadership development and blends it with a powerful coaching approach that allows people to access their own wisdom and leverage their strengths to rise up to challenges and opportunities.

Diane is a native Phoenician who is happily married and blessed with three beautiful children.
