Author Spotlight - Debra L. Martin

Debra L. Martin
Science fiction and fantasy author who started writing with co-author, David W Small in 2006. Writing with a co-author is challenging in itself, but when one author lives on the East Coast and one lives on the West Coast, the challenges are a bit more daunting, but because we live in an electronic world of email, Instant Messenger and Skype, the partnership is totally workable.
They have 2 science fiction novels, "Quest for Nobility" and "Crystal Facade" of the RULE OF OTHARIA trilogy available for sale as well as two novellas "The Right Path" and "Path to War" in the DARK FUTURE series.

Check out Debra's author page at Amazon.com

At the time I scheduled this post, The Right Path (Apocalyptic Novelette) (Dark Future Series) was FREE at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Description
Abraham "Ham" Jones, a cripple, and Zia Slate, a tomboy with an attitude, find themselves unlikely partners in this post-apocalyptic tale of survival. It is decades later since the world blew itself apart. Life is harsh, gangs rule the streets, the system cops keep the peace anyway they can. Being a kid in this world isn't easy, being a cripple is about the worst sentence handed down. Being a girl with no protection is only slightly better.

Ham and Zia's lives are irrevocably changed when they meet a mysterious old man bearing gifts - a cane for Ham and a knife for Zia. But, nothing is as it seems. Everyone wants something and no good deed goes unpunished. Forced into a desperate encounter, they must fight for their lives when it's discovered they now have possession of two of the legendary memory weapons, the very weapons that ultimately destroyed the world.

THE RIGHT PATH is ~12,000 words.

Description

Can a ragtag band of soldiers save what's left of the USA?

In a last ditch attempt to turn the tide in a desperate war, General Matthew Smith of the American Freedom Fighters asks Samurai Master Kenzu to make a batch of the famed memory weapons--weapons that infuse its user with the skills and memories of a samurai warrior. But, in the wrong hands, the users can become uncontrollable killing machines who don't care whom they kill - friend or foe.

When General Smith orders Commander Hurley and his unit of augmented soldiers test the weapons, he believes that he's doing the best thing for all of the men under his command. What General Smith believes, however, and what is true is entirely two different things and Smith must live with the consequences of his decision.

PATH TO DESTRUCTION is ~10,000 words.

Description

The parents of royal Otharian twins Darius and Dyla have been murdered; their cousin is stealing their throne, and they are falsely accused of murder. Their only choice is to flee to the forbidden and quarantined planet Earth, but it could turn out to be a one-way trip.

To return home, they must find an ancient crystal, that once belonged to Merlin, to power the return portal. When the twins stumble upon the location of the crystal, the local crime boss sends out his assassin to retrieve it. Can Darius and Dyla use their PSI powers to open the portal home and reclaim their throne before the assassin catches up to them?

Description

Royal Otharian twins Darius and Dyla Telkur have a big problem: they know too much about a secret sect of their countrymen living on the forbidden planet Earth. On a previous trip to Earth, they traced the sect's lineage back to the time of Merlin, but a run-in with a local crime boss forced them back to Otharia before they could unravel the mystery.

Now Dyla is dreaming again. Her dreams of the London crime boss portend an imminent threat to her family and she has no choice but to secretly return to Earth to find out what they mean. What the twins don't realize is they're walking into a conspiracy involving a centuries old interplanetary smuggling operation. Will they be able to capitalize on their superior PSI powers to get the answers they need before they fall victim to a telekinetic assassin that has followed them across the galaxy?

And...

I've been horrible about keeping up with my blog this month.  I apologize to anyone who was looking forward to my next post.  I have my oldest daughter back from her vacation, and I hope to utilize her to keep the little ones occupied today so I can schedule some posts.

So, to kick off the week, I'm going to post some pictures of The Badlands of South Dakota.  We did a quick little drive through this past weekend.  The colors are wonderful in some of the pictures.

Whatever Tuesday?

I'm hoping to get my act together and start posting books again real soon.  I have several authors lined up, but I'm wanting to do some interviews as well.  Until then, I thought I'd just post some random pictures.

I planned on taking at least one garden picture a week, but I have been slacking lately.  Today is very rainy, but I did go out to take pictures.  However, I haven't weeded yet.  I know you'll want to ask, "Where's the garden?"  It's there, I promise.

These are the potatoes.  So far, THE best plants in the garden (besides the grass and stickers).

Sunflowers

Peas

Yes, there are onions in there somewhere!

I started to weed this the other day.  It's my grape, clematis and miniature rose.  The clematis fell off the trellis, but it was too rainy for me to fix it right now.

We went to Aberdeen a couple of weekends ago to drop off my oldest daughter.  She's spending some time with our cousins.  We did some fun things while we were there and this is my favorite picture from the trip.  Big and little!  Big is my soon to be cousin-in-law and little is my youngest.  She's quite shy so it was really cool that the two of them were fast friends.

Featured Book - Chemicaust by Daniel T. Moore

Chemicaust
by
Daniel T. Moore

Chemicaust (Mad Element Saga)

Chemicaust is a short story that is available for both Amazon Kindle and at Free-eBooks.net

Book description:
What might men do with unlimited power? And what might they allow to be done?

Chem is the Mad Element. It is a blessing and a curse with as many names as shades and hues. Some call it liquor of the Gods or Blessing of the Benefactor. Those of the Red Guard call it Michael's Blood, but all names refer to the same element, a chemical compound with many pieces, or no trace on the periodic table at all. It pollutes the world, fills the skies with rippling rainbow smog, an aurora borealis of gasses and choking fumes. The Mad Element wards away death, grants power unimaginable, and twists man and nature. It is corruption in a vial, or the key to life.

Chemicaust is the story of a soldier, brainwashed but well fed and well looked after by the corps. This man, Luke, is set a mission to retrieve a person of interest, a person with no little power, but his mission ends in disaster. Luke wakes in a desert where once a forest had grown. He is crippled, weak and without defence, but struggles towards civilization. Chemicaust is the story of Luke’s need to find humanity and to realize his own humanity in turn, and it all starts with an explosion.
Welcome to dystopia. Welcome to the Mad Element Saga.

You can either purchase this short story for only 99¢ at Amazon or download a free copy at Free-eBooks.net

Torment
by
Jeremy Bishop

I read Torment by Jeremy Bishop a few weeks ago.  I have to say that I enjoyed the book - just have to say it...

The cover is what drew me to this book.  It's amazing!  The story itself is a different version of the zombies take over the earth type of story but I really did like it.  This is one, if you like the zombie stories or a dystopian type of story, this could easily be one you'd like.

DESCRIPTION:

Small town reporter, Mia Durante, finds herself having brunch with the President of the United States on the day civilization comes to an end. An electromagnetic pulse blinds the U.S. Cars crash. Planes fall. Chaos reigns. Power is restored within minutes, but it’s already too late. Russian nukes are falling. U.S. allies around the world are all ready wiped out. The United States will cease to exist inside of five minutes.

After giving the order to launch a full-scale retaliation, dooming the planet, the president, White House staff, Secret Service and those lucky enough to be visiting the white house, are whisked below ground where they board several Earth Escape Pods. As the EEPs launch into Earth orbit, missiles descend.

Less than forty survive the end of the world. When they return, they’re greeted by survivors of a different sort. The bloodbath that follows leaves Durante and nine other survivors on the run. They find themselves fighting for survival in a world in which only torment remains and where death is the only escape.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jeremy Bishop has, by all outward appearances, lived a normal life. He grew up in a nice home, in a friendly seaside town. But, as is often, the pleasant facade seen at first glance conceals a darker side. Throughout childhood and early teen years he encountered malevolent entities that whisked in and out of rooms, moved furniture and haunted his dreams.

He processed these encounters through drawings of monsters and devils, expunging horrible images from his mind. As an adult, he continues to expel the monsters of his childhood through his novels, the first of which, TORMENT, is based on a dream. Enter the mind of Jeremy Bishop if you dare. Share his nightmares. Experience the fear that shaped his life. You may never be the same.

Whatever Wednesday

I've gotten to where I really like my Whatever Wednesday posts.  I like listing books, don't get me wrong, but I really like showing off my garden and sharing recipes too.

Today I'm going to do both - show off my garden AND give you a recipe.

I'll start with the recipe.  It's a dessert - imagine that.  Me?  A dessert recipe?  Yes, I love desserts!

The pictures aren't the best, but I tried.

This is like a French Silk Pie (I think).

I completely cheated on this one... shhh.

I used two boxs of Jello chocolate mousse, a pre-made pie shell (I DID have to bake it) and whipped cream.  Tah-dah... done!

In retrospect, I should have used some chocolate shavings on top for dramatic effect, but it was delicious without it!

Of course, if you're feeling the baking bug you can make your own crust and your own mousse and your own whipped cream.  But, if you aren't going to be lazy, like me, you won't have any complaints about looking up those recipes all by yourself.  Haha!

Now, onto gardening.

I'm just going to put up a few pictures of my grapes that are, miraculously, coming back this year!

I know, I know... It's not very big, but is sure is pretty (and green!).

Featured Book - Dead to Writes by Cathy Wiley

Dead to Writes
by
Cathy Wiley

Product Description

Cassandra Ellis is a soon-to-be published author, days away from achieving her lifetime goal. But before she can celebrate, before she can even have her first book signing, she’s brought in to Baltimore City Police Headquarters for questioning in connection to a real-life murder.

It seems she’s the last person to see the victim alive, since she had just met with the former arsonist to conduct research for her next book. Most damning, her day planner was found next to the body.

When another of her subject matter experts is killed-- again right after meeting with her-- Cassie decides to investigate things herself, rather than leaving it in the hands of the police. Although she’d love to get her hands on the homicide detective assigned to the cases.

Using all the tools available to her, including her research skills, her knowledge of murder and murderers, and… psychic parrots, she tries to solve the case before another friend is killed. Along the way, she finds out that murder in real life is different than murder on the page.

About the Author

While her dream of biking and camping around the United States never came true, Cathy Wiley has achieved her childhood goal of writing mysteries. She's happiest when plotting stories in her head or on the computer, or when she's delving into research, be it hands-on or in books. (Or yes, the Internet, but she makes certain to confirm that information.)

She draws upon her experience as an event planner and human resources manager to show the lighter, quirkier side of people. And upon her own morbid mind to show the darker side.
In her free time, she enjoys scuba diving, dancing, wine, food, and reading. She lives outside of Baltimore, Maryland, with two very spoiled cats. She would greatly enjoy getting e-mail from her fans. She can be reached at cathy_wiley@zapstone.com
