Reining In (The Network)
I read Reining In the last half of 2010 and finished Phantom Rising shortly after it was released in November.  I love the story of Khalida, a five-thousand year-old vampire who has spent the majority of her life just trying to survive people and other vampires.  I wrote a Recently Read post about Reining In that you can find HERE.
Reining In Description:
After witnessing the murder of one of her dearest friends, Khalida finds herself caught between doing what she knows is right and letting go of her past. With the help of the Network, an organization created to keep her secrets buried, Khalida will battle enemies as old as time. But will the secrets of her past destroy everything she knows and loves? Soon, another friend is facing his death, and she will have to save him. Others will follow, and she will have to make the hardest decision of her life. There is only one way to save her friends from this enemy. As she races against time, Khalida will learn that sometimes your past comes back to haunt you, even when you are a vampire.

Now, onto the fun part of today's blog!
I will be interviewing Khalida in her first blog interview!

Me:  It’s great to have you here with us today.  Thank you for taking the time to do this.

My first question has to do with your age.  I know it’s not polite to ask a lady her age but I’m curious.  Feel free not to answer.  But, how old are you, exactly?

Khalida:  Exactly?  Well, the pyramids were still being built when I was born, so around 5,000 years, give or take a few hundred years.

Me:  Can you tell us a little about your childhood?  Where were you born?  What kind of a life did you live and how have things changed from “back-then”?

Khalida:  My childhood wasn't that great.  I lived as a slave in the Pharaoh's palace.  I was treated horribly by his wife because she knew my true identity.  My entire life, I dreamed of escaping.
Things have changed so much since then.  It's hard to put into words the things I've seen in my lifetime.  It would probably take too long.

Me:  What exactly is The Network and how did it come about?

Khalida:  The Network started out with a few people who were close to me.  They used their positions in life to protect my identity and to help me out when I needed something.  As the Network grew, a dummy corporation went up to mask the operation, and soon the Network itself grew to several hundred people.  Most are very close to me; my friends, my family.

Me:  How does being a vampire affect your life?

Khalida:  It is what saved me from the life I was in.  It is what brought me to the life I have now.  But it has always been hard.  You see the ones you love grow old and die.  Very few of them choose immortality.  Unless you want to become somebody's science project, you must always live in hiding.  That was hard on me.  I wanted to live a normal life like normal people.  That's why I created the Network, so that I could continue to live out in the open without anyone becoming suspicious.  By altering my identity when it needed to be, they kept me in the real world.

Me:  Do you prefer being a vampire or do you wish you were human?

Khalida:  I would love to be human again.  There are times when I grow tired of constantly looking over my shoulder to see who might be coming after me or who has discovered my secret.  Growing old with the ones I love would be a blessing.  There have been times in my life when I thought of ending it all, but the will to live is stronger than the desire for peace.  If the choice were taken away from me, it would be easier to accept.

Me:  Do you have a special man in your life?

Khalida:  I do, but things are complicated between us.  Jake has no desire to spend eternity with me and I don't want to watch him die.  The only one who really understands me and doesn't make me feel guilty for being who I am is Mack.  He would die for me.  Um, about Jake.  I do love him.

Thank you for being here with us today but I do have a few more questions for Dawn Judd.

Me:  Dawn, will there be another in the series and if so, when can we expect it?

There will definitely be a 3rd book.   I'm hoping to finish it by spring.  I'm excited about this one.  Without giving anything away, just know that it is going to be different from the first two.  There is a possibility of a 4th book.  I've been asked by several people to do a prequel.  I think it would be fun.  I haven't decided yet.

Me:  What gave you the idea for the books?

My children asked  me to write them a vampire story.  I wanted something original.  I thought about how hard it would be to be a vampire in the 21st century.  It's getting harder and harder to go unnoticed in our society without help.  So that is how the Network was born.

Me:  Is there anything else you have been working on?

Dawn:  I have been working on a few projects.  I have two new series coming up.  One I hope to work on very soon, and I'm pretty excited about it.  I don't want to give away anything on that one just yet.  The second series is one I'm working on with a group of authors.  I'm actually writing just one book in the series.  It is a fantasy story geared towards middle-grade or young adult.  The series is called the Kingdom of Eridhborn.  Since it's still in the planning stage, I can't tell you much.  We are hoping to have the first book done by April, but it's been a slow process.  Working on a collaboration is much harder than working alone.  It's been a fun journey, though.

Thanks again to both Khalida and Dawn.
